Shaping the Future of Tech: NIWIIT Plateau State Chapter, Plateau State ICT Development Agency, and Internet Society Nigeria Host Girls in ICT Summit 2025
In celebration of the International Girls in ICT Day, the Nigerian Women in Information Technology (NIWIIT), Plateau State Chapter partnered with the Plateau State ICT Development Agency and Internet Society Nigeria hosted the Girls in ICT Day Summit 2025. The event themed “Girls in ICT for Inclusive Digital Transformation” gathered stakeholders in the state.

The summit brought together 200 Girls across 10 secondary schools in Plateau State to expose them to the possibilities in the world of technology. The girls were inspired to pursue careers in ICT through panel discussions with women tech leaders and demo sessions covering Internet of Things, Embedded Systems, AR/VR, and Cybersecurity.

The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang was ably represented by the Deputy Governor, Ngo Josephine Piyo, who gave the keynote address. In his speech, the Governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and gender inclusion. He urged the girls to take advantage of the opportunities that abound in the world of ICT.

The Director General, Plateau State ICT Development Agency represented by the Director Talent Management, Mr. Yoila Yusuf emphasized the importance of empowering the girl-child. Mr. Yusuf reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring inclusive participation in the digital age.

The Honourable Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, Hon Dr. Cletus Shurkuk in his goodwill message highlighted a concerning statistic about the digital gender divide. Dr. Shurkuk noted that around 95% of girls particularly in rural areas lack internet access, limiting their opportunities for growth and learning. Hence, the commissioner called on stakeholders to intensify efforts towards closing the gap.

Honourable Bomkam Wuyep, Director General of the Plateau State Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency represented by his Director of Finance and Administration reiterated the importance of gender inclusion in sustainable development. Honourable Wuyep thanked the Governor for approving the establishment of the Plateau Job Center.

Representing the Nigerian Women in Information Technology Plateau State Chapter Coordinator, the Secretary Winifred Wang expressed appreciation to the Governor for his unwavering support and commitment to youth empowerment, gender inclusion, and digital transformation in the state. She added that his leadership continues to open doors for the next generation of innovators.
The Treasurer of the Internet Society, Nigeria Chapter, Igba Priscillia appreciated the young girls, mentors, sponsors and partners who made the summit possible. She stated that an investment in the Girl child is an investment in the digital future of the state and nation.
