The history of Nigerian Women In Information Technology began when the NCS National 2nd Vice President, Dr.(Mrs) Adeola Ilechukwu informed the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigerian Computer Society (NCS) at her 17th regular Council meeting on the 24th February 2012 that it would be necessary to create an Interest Group for female members of NCS. She argued strongly that the existing Interest Groups (ISPON, ITAN, ISPAN, etc.) did not meet the needs of the majority of the female members of the society. She stated categorically that she was ready to take on the challenge as the Vice President to ensure the inauguration of this new interest group in NCS. With the approval from NEC, Nigerian Women In Information Technology (NIWIIT) was born.

This interest group is imperative to empower and encourage women working in the field of Information and Communication Technologies. NIWIIT will work with the government, interest groups, and other stakeholders to achieve objectives for women in IT in unique and innovative ways. Events and activities will recognize the impact of women in ICT while promoting the advancement of women in ICTs. NIWIIT is focused on increasing active participation and contribution at all levels in the IT industry. The group will work on “catching them young” through events highlighting opportunities for young girls and young women in educational institutions, government agencies, and ICT-driven organizations. ICT is a growing sector that the whole world depends on and more girls and young women need to consider careers and opportunities in Information Technology.

NIWIIT (Nigerian Women In Information Technology) is a special interest group of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS). We are positioned to be a premier organisation known to successfully cultivate mutually beneficial Networks between industry, academia, and government, focusing on women working in Information Technology across the Nation.

NIWIIT will be evolutionary, visionary, and acknowledged as an industry peak body that delivers a high standard of value to all members.
